This summer, the concert and activity program at #LaPlayaVerde is packed with something for everyone. Our season kicks off on Monday, July 16th, with a night of dance music, headlined by a mix of mambo, cha-cha-cha, and rock & roll by Mexican band La Redada and a tropical session by Costa Rican DJ Selecta Gaan. Is there no better way to start the season than with high spirits?
This year, we wanted to once again feature on our Flamenco Tuesdays performances that start from the purest, with names like Eva and Domingo Rubichi, Joaquín de Sola, and Juan Menese (Jerez, La Isla, La Puebla de Cazalla, almost nothing…); they go through the middle path of fusion with jazz (Jon Ayuga Quintet) and end with the most groundbreaking, as is the case with “Los Voluble” and experimental guitarist Raúl Cantizano, who also returns for a double performance with Proscritos DF. There will also be surprises we’re not used to, such as Pepele Méndez in an intimate recital format after a couple of years without seeing him sing in the area. He, incidentally, accompanies another of the bands on the bill: Canastéreo.
Canastéreo is one of those names that have recently begun to emerge on the Andalusian music scene. And you already know that we’re drawn to emergencies: La Big Rabia, Astropalido, The Magic Mor, Martes Niebla, Flecha Valona, Derbi Motoreta’s Burrito Cachimba (whom many call the new Triana), and Cráneo Calavera, the freshly minted project from Pablo Peña of Pony Bravo, are other examples of this on this summer’s lineup.
While we were searching, we had a real crush on some of the bands that appeared along the way almost by chance. This is the case with the British Matt Grimsdale (that voice somewhere between Tindersticks, Morrissey, and Edwin Collins will enchant you!), the Malaga-based Red Rombo, the Madrid-based Fario, Nadie Canta (they couldn’t be more refreshing), and of course Branquias Johnson, the one-man band who blew us away last year. And what would we be without our familiar friends, with whom we’ve spent so many summers enjoying ourselves, like Music Komite, Dani Llamas, or Los Jaguares de la Bahía fronted by Paco Loco, who began their journey right here in our country years ago?
We’d also be committing a sin if good reggae wasn’t present at #LaPlayaVerde this summer. It will be brought to you by Valladolid’s The Iberians and Peru’s Laguna Pai. JamesW’s vinyl records will be the best complement, with a couple of sessions of genre classics and rare treasures. The tireless Piratas Rumberos, who you will also see lately transformed into the Rumbversions, the world music soniquete (as she calls it) of La Chocolata, the masterful jazz of Miguelo Delgado Trío, the blues-swing of Boki Jackson, the afrofunk hip hop of One Pac & Fellows, the cuban-sideral grooves of Kumar Sublevao-Beat, a perfect end to the weekend with Los Dominguito DJ… There will be no shortage of anything here, not even theater, with the Barbateña company La Aurora, directed by Sergio Román, making us laugh and reflect in equal parts. She’ll be here to present three of her best offerings: a night of Microtheater and another with two plays that we couldn’t miss because of how much they mean to us, considering our geographic location: “La Leva” and “Las Entrechas.”
And if we strive to outdo ourselves in something every year, this summer we want to finally give children the place they deserve on the green. At “La Playa Verde Kids,” they’ll be the stars every Wednesday starting at 8 p.m. The Espacio Drang team (great nature lovers who are in charge of the Summer Drang morning school) will be accompanying their free activities with a short series of concerts (don’t miss the cumbia night with Sonidero Pacheco and Candela Viva), improvised dance workshops (come join the Da Mopa show!), musical stories from around the world (hosted by the eternal child Moke), and shows to get the whole family laughing (Surfer Clown).
Oh, we almost forgot! If you need to recharge your batteries in the midst of all this, we’ll make it easy for you before each weekend starts: Joaquín YaYoga is back with his #YogaFridays.
See you this summer?
